He's an open-minded musician who embraces jazz, Indian classical music, abstract improvisation and Asian pop, a dazzling percussion virtuoso, an accessible entertainer. A world class percussionist, Trilok Gurtu is a five-time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll for best percussionist, and a Best Artist Asia/Pacific nominee for the BBC World Music Awards. He was born to a highly musical family in Bombay and started to play at the age of six. His deeply rooted Indian tradition combined with elements of jazz and rock have made Trilok Gurtu an established master of World Music. Mr. Gurtu's burning sense of rhythm has attracted a wide-ranging set of world class collaborators, including John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Pat Metheny, Phoroah Sanders, Dave Holland and numerous musicians from India, Africa and other nations. From a lifetime of music and touring, Trilok Gurtu has given his audiences eleven albums and countless appearances all over the world.
